Denver light rail seeks bidders

21 May 2012 Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) has issued a request for proposals for its I-225 light rail extension project.

A private firm will design, build and finance a route along the highway corridor and rebuilding two bridges, a new station and bus-rail interchange at Iliff, together with a 600-space car park.

The works will be funded by $90m out of the $305m of short-term funds which have been allocated in the 2011 FasTracks Financial Plan for work on projects not yet in construction.

RTD received an unsolicited proposal from Kiewit for the scheme in April. Kiewit led the design-build construction team on the Transportation Expansion (T-REX) project – a joint highway/light rail project of RTD and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Kiewit is also currently constructing the transit improvements at Denver Union Station.

Initial construction work for the first segment of the I-225 line from Parker Road to Iliff has just begun in partnership with CDOT.
